New greater rift key system, NO more trials.(1)Category: GeneralNovember-11-2014 2:23 PM PST (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
So I have been thinking about a new way to acquire Grift keys and I want some opinions on it. What if you got a Grift key after each normal rift only it was a random number in a set range. Therefore if finish a rift you get a Grift key from 21-25 to start. If you beat level 25, you get the next range and acquire level 26-30 Grift keys. When you beat level 30, 31-35 are available and so on. Then you could go to Orek and set the range to what you want. So if your levelling gems you can set the range to 16-20 Grift keys and farm them by doing rifts but if you want a bunch of high keys you can also easily farm them as well. I think this makes it way more fun and exciting because there is still a level of RNG available to get the high key (imagine instead of the same trial key drop after each rift was a potentially high Grift key). You would also be excited after each rift to see if you got the max level of Grift key so you can try and get to the next range. This system would also give a more natural progression so that all classes can get high keys. Let me know what you think and throw some good ideas to build on it.

Thanks for sharing your ideas, and for soliciting others to jump in on the conversation too! We love hearing alternate takes on current systems. Getting a perspective on what you enjoy or would like to see in the game is just as valuable as knowing what you don't like or may not find super entertaining.

Just to jump in really quickly on the Realm of Trials, Wyatt Cheng touched on this topic briefly when asked whether we’ll be tweaking the Realm of Trials (as well as the monsters within them) during the Q&A portion of the "What’s Next?" panel at BlizzCon. In case you weren't able to tune in, his response is below, which I’ve edited for clarity:

“There’s changes coming to the Realm of Trials. We’ve gotten a lot of feedback and we’re looking at the pacing of the Trials and the monsters in the Trials. Just last week, we changed it so that all the monsters in a Trial can be vortexed or knocked back. …. We want to make sure there’s more consistent [difficulty] progression [as you increase in Trial Waves].”

Travis Day also talked about the Realm of Trials a bit in an interview with Flux from Diablo IncGamers:

IncGamers: Speaking of Rifts, how about the Realm of Trials? Some people hate doing it. They hate doing Waves, and character builds vary a lot in how effect they are in that area. People always ask why they can’t start on the last Rift they did, instead of doing Waves. And sure, that kind of usurps the function of Urshi and the choice players have to make between upgrading their gems or their rift key… I’ve heard many people talk about how they can only do say Wave 30, but up to Greater Rift 35 or 38. Unless they party with some Demon Hunters, in which case they can start right out on GR40. Is that a concern for you guys, balancing Waves with Greater Rifts?

Travis: We talk about this a lot… How often people should need to do trials… This is something that we know we want to change, but we don’t necessarily know what we want to do yet. I talk about this with Wyatt a lot. We know we want to have Trials, they serve a very good purpose to let players not have to clear 1-30 every time, that’s why we have trials. They can be a point of friction for people who want to do a lot of Greater Rifts in a row.

But at the same time, when I go to a ride, and they take out a measuring stick and say you must be this tall, they don’t measure me again the second time, and the third time, and the fourth time I go through the line. So we want to reduce the amount that players need to do Trials, but not remove them entirely.

In short, we agree with you that the entry mechanism for Greater Rifts can be improved and are looking at a variety of methods to make the experience better down the road. You’ll see a few small improvements to the Realm of Trials in patch 2.1.2, including changes to the monsters that spawn, but any significant changes beyond that would be something we’d tackle in a future patch (though I don’t have any further details to share just yet).

In the meantime, we hope you'll keep sharing, discussing, and encouraging ideas like this one!
