games freeze, "alt-tab" and temporary black screen(1)Category: Technical SupportOctober-14-2015 2:05 AM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hey guys!
I've bought a new laptop and upgraded it to Windows 10. Updated all the drivers, then tried playing Diablo 3, but the game is unplayable for me. It frequently freezes, drops me to the desktop, then goes back into the game, but has a causes a black screen for about 5 seconds. Then I tried going back to Windows 8.1, but the same issues still happen. Then I tried other non-Blizzard games, to see if the problems still occur, and sadly they do.
Tried the AMD Beta driver, tried setting the power plans and such to maximum performance, tried reinstalling games and windows, neither of these worked. Do you guys have any ideas on how to fix this? It seems to me that the system is trying to sort of launch another program, or something like this (because when it alt-tabs, it shows me either the desktop or some random window, which I can't figure what it is).
Here are my system specs: Samsung ativ book 8, i7-3630, Radeon HD 8870m, 16 gb RAM, Samsung 850 SSD.
ps: sorry for the bad english, not my native :)

Hi there snow, thanks for the DXDiag!

Could you make sure that the game is definitely using the AMD 8870M by temporarily disabling the Intel 4000 display adapter in your Device Manager?

But if I disable the HD 4000 display, it wouldn't run the game, because the "GPU is missing features" and it leaves me with a grey screen.

Thanks for the update. If this is the case, could you make sure that your Intel drivers are fully up to date too? As far as I can see those drivers are over 2 years old which could be causing some issues. You should be able to grab an update from the Samsung support site.

This is actually an issue with the Desktop App itself rather than Diablo III snow, which is interesting. It may just be a one-off coincidence but to test could you create a shortcut on your desktop to the "DiabloIII.exe" on your desktop and add "-launch" to the shortcut's properties? Your Target should look something like this:

"C:\Program Files\Diablo III\Diablo III.exe" -launch

Launch the game from there and see if the issues persist.
