DirectX12 and Diablo 3(1)Category: GeneralFebruary-25-2015 1:12 AM PST (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hi guys. I have been following closely the whole DX12 hype, and at this point I am certain it will be a real revolution in gaming visuals. But what does that mean for Diablo? Do you guys think Blizzard can take advantage of the new software technology?
For example:
Imagine what multiple light - sources can do to the visuals! Superior depth-of-field, creepy shadows, super-realistic world...
Or an encounter with more than 200 mobs on one place?
Or ultra-detailed full-hd world (It is amazing now... but imagine the devs really go to town on visuals)
What do you guys think? Will we see a massive visual upgrade for our favorite game?

the developer has to write their game so that they’re interacting with the GPU through multiple cores simultaneously. Most games, even today, are still written so that only 1 core is dedicated to interacting with the GPU.

Quoted from the article.

Programming is not an expertise of mine, but it looks like the release of DirectX 12 won't automatically improve game graphics since game developers will have to write/rewrite their game to make use of the technology that DirectX 12 support. I have no knowledge at this point in time if the developers have plans to do this for Diablo III, but it is certainly a cool thing to imagine how the game would look like with DirectX 12 visuals enabled :-)

This is an intentional choice to make the game run on the largest number of systems. Cant see the devs putting in the time to add dx12 suport for a few people with high end hardware.

The system requirements for Diablo III are not too demanding, and that is intended as you say, but DirectX 12 will not only be for high end hardware though. When windows 10 is released, and DirectX 12 with it, there will seemingly be a good level of backward-compatibility with existing systems of several performance levels.

A quote from a pcworld article on the topic:
PC gaming hardware will work well with DirectX12, including; nVidia’s Maxwell, Kepler and Fermi-based GPUs, Intel’s 4th generation (and newer) Core processors and AMD’s Graphics Core Next (GCN) based GPUs.

That is a large range of systems, not just high end, and I think this makes DirectX 12 quite interesting for game developers in general. But that is of course just speculation on my end, as I'm not a game developer myself :-)
