I just got run out of a rift and for the first time ever in D3 I elected not to go back and finish what I started. It would've been certain death to set foot in that rift one last time.

I'd gone in and right at the entry there was a pack of elite anarchs. As a pet doc I'm totally gimped because I have no fetishes and no way to get them. I can't really get any to proc on the stupid anarchs which won't clump or sit still to be rained on. I have zero maneuvering room -- a narrow stairway is what I have to work with. Between Gary and Big Dog we whittle them down and start into the rift.

The rift itself was a pretty typical setup.. anarchs, exarchs, winged assassins, those undead bull things, and those freakin turbo ghosts. Basically, the worst possible set of mobs for a pet doc since the pets have a really hard time engaging with mobs that are constantly leaping and charging everywhere and it's incredibly hard to proc any fetishes on those mobs. I hadn't gotten more than a few steps into the battlefields when I stumbled over another two packs.. one those stupid elite ghosts.

The battle starts to sprawl across the field. Adds are adding. Things aren't dying... except for big dog. Nothing EVER kills big dog. I can't get even a moment to port out and I start trying to work my way back to the entrance. Along the way I agro 2 or 3 more elite packs.. it was getting hard to tell by that point. I was pretty much constantly being jailed, frozen, smacked by thunderstorm, or otherwise molested. Seldom could I even see the mobs attacking me as most of them were off screen.

By the time I get back to the stairwell at least two full packs have charged down the stairwell and are now completely surrounding me as well as blocking the last few stairs to the rift entrance. All my cooldowns are popped including spirit vessel. I'm stuck 3 stairs away from the rift entrance and utterly surrounded by A5 elites. A last desperate piranado nudges a few of them aside and I sneek between them and out of the rift entrance with about 5% health and a heart rate of 2000BPM.

That moment right there is why I play hardcore. I'm glad I didn't die but it very easily could've gone that way and I would have had no regrets.

The day that Reaper of Souls was released our group powered through to the Malthael’s lair, but once inside it was clear that our group had made a big mistake. After what seemed like 10 minutes later, I finally looked up to the boss' health bar and saw that we only had him down to 75 percent. All of our lives were fluctuating like pistons in a car and we were just barely hanging in there. My stomach turned, and I just about wanted to give up… but just as quickly as my heart sank I found myself bracing and holding on for the long fight. After several more minutes, death finally claimed me. I sat there shocked, but it became clear that the fight was not lost. My surviving friends were dancing around everything that Malthael was dishing out in desperation, however they were making progress. At the last moment when it seemed they could take no more, Malthael fell. I earned the achievement for the kill, and still had unlocked adventure mode. It was bittersweet, but I felt vindicated nonetheless.

After the fight my buddies called me up and we recalled the story in detail, each of us hollering as we retold it. It remains one of the most epic encounters I've had in all my time adventuring though Sanctuary. This is why I play HC, it was a good death.

Thanks for sharing your story, Snapshot. Here's hoping your adventures produce many more epic tales!
