|Bane of the Powerful - working as intended?||September-25-2014 8:49 AM PDT (6 years ago)|
|While running with BotP legendary gem equipped, I noticed some inconsistencies. I'm not sure whether these are intended or not.|
WON'T trigger BotP
- regular monsters
- adds summoned by bosses
- partial elite pack kills (only rare, only minions, only one of the champions etc.)
WILL trigger BotP
- treasure goblins
- unique monsters
- entire elite packs (rare + all minions, all champions in a pack)
- mirror images cast by monsters with "Illusionist" elite affix (including minions and Xah'Rith the Keywarden from A3)
It feels a bit strange, to say the least. Because of this, if you get lucky enough to find an Illusionist elite, the buff will trigger mid-fight and will be refreshed each time you get to kill a clone. Unique monsters and treasure goblin are nearly as good, as they should be quite easy to kill.
On the other hand, if you encounter a champion pack or a regular rare monster with minions, you won't see the buff icon until you kill the entire pack - every single champion and every minion there is.
Simple: any single "elite" monster (boss, unique, rare, champion, or goblin, but NOT minions or mirror images) killed will trigger the Bane of the Powerful buff, meaning if you face a rare pack, you just have to target the elite to get the bonus, and if you encounter champions, every one of them will provide & refresh the buff in turn.
PS: It's probably well-known already, but if your follower has a legacy Puzzle Ring equipped (though it should work on the character as well), it will summon a treasure goblin even in the Rift of Trials or Greater Rift. Such goblin drops gold and tries to escape normally, but at least in GR won't drop any loot. It will still trigger BotP buff, though.

|The damage bonus that’s applied by slaying Elite monsters with Bane of the Powerful functions differently depending on the Elite(s). In situations where there is a single Elite (like a Treasure Goblin or Act boss) then it's pretty straight forward in the sense that once you kill that Elite you get the buff. When the Elites are in some form of a pack, though, it gets slightly more complicated. The entire pack will need to be slain in order to trigger the buff. That includes every member of a Champion pack, or all of the minions along with their Elite master. |
That said, there's currently a bug that allows Bane of the Powerful to apply its bonus damage after killing illusions, which is not intended. We'll be sure to let everyone know through the appropriate channel once that fix is implemented, so be sure to keep an eye out for it.
