Should I buy the expansion now or later?(1)Category: New Player HelpAugust-4-2014 7:05 AM PDT (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
I have a mid 20s monk nearing the end of Act I playing on expert for my first playthrough. Loving playing on that difficulty level. Were I to buy the expansion, I wouldn't try a Crusader. And since I'm still on Act I, I'm pretty far away from Act V.

So, what else am I missing out on that would make it worthwhile to own the expansion for my first playthrough? I've read the expansion features and don't really understand it.

A new artisan, the Mystic, can enhance the properties and appearance of the player's equipment.

As far as your first playthrough goes, the most significant additions will be the new Crusader class, Act V, and being able to access the Mystic. Additionally, with Reaper of Souls you’ll be able to access Adventure Mode once Malthael has been defeated. Adventure Mode allows you to hop back and forth within all Acts as you hunt down various enemies and complete different objectives. Upon completion of an Act’s bounties, you are awarded a Horadric Cache which includes various treasures (with a chance for Legendaries to drop). The caches also provide Keystone fragments which will let you access the Nephalem rifts: vast, randomized areas which include all-new combinations of enemies and an individual Rift Guardian at the end of the run.

If you’re still getting the hang of Diablo III and checking out the core classes, then the original game should be sufficient. Otherwise, if you’re looking for new challenges then Reaper of Souls is definitely the way to go!
