Legendary Gems Overhauled Again in Patch 2.1.0 PTR

Another PTR patch refines the new gems for rings and amulets

Diablo III Public Test Realm
A new build arrived last night for the Diablo III Patch 2.1 that is being updated on the Public Test Realm. It included significant refinements for the new Legendary Gems, overhauling their system once again. The patch also brought another change to the power of the Legendary weapon Rimeheart. The patch is playable now on the PTR; while we wait for the updated patch notes, here are the latest Blizzard Blues posts about the changes.

Legendary Gem System Updated
In typical Blizzard fashion, the new Legendary Gem system has been changed a lot during the iteration over the past two months. The latest patch makes it easier to upgrade enough to obtain the second power on a Legendary Gem. Getting extremely high power levels will now require being able to beat high Greater Rifts. The new Diablo III community manager Tyvalir explained the changes, with a sneak peak of the upcoming PTR patch notes.

To upgrade a gem I need to skip the next rift level and start the trial over again??
Or am I missing something

Yes, you will need to start over again.

After you defeat the Rift Guardian in a Greater Rift, you can choose to attempt to upgrade your Legendary Gem(s), or receive a higher level Greater Rift Keystone. However, you'll only get the second option if you cleared the Rift within the time limit.

Generally speaking, it’s better to opt for a higher level Greater Rift Keystone over gem upgrade attempts—if you can handle the increase in difficulty. This is because your odds of successfully upgrading your gems will increase with each Greater Rift level you complete (and because attempting to upgrade your Legendary Gems always ends your current run).

Regardless of when you try upgrading your Legendary Gems, you’ll have three attempts per Greater Rift run. The chance for an upgrade attempt to succeed depends on both the level of the Greater Rift you completed and the rank of the Legendary Gem you’re trying to upgrade. Here’s a quick call-out from our patch notes for an upcoming PTR build:

  • Urshi will grant you three attempts to upgrade your Legendary Gems
  • The chance for an upgrade attempt to succeed is based on a combination of the rank of the Legendary Gem you're attempting to upgrade and the level of Greater Rift you reached
  • As a Legendary Gem's rank gets closer to the level of Greater Rift you've completed, the chance of success decreases
  • Finally, once the rank of a Legendary Gem exceeds the level of Greater Rift you're able to complete the chance to upgrade is cut in half for each rank above the Greater Rift level you completed
    • For example: If you attempt to upgrade a rank 1 Legendary Gem in a level 30 Greater Rift the chance for success is 100%; however a rank 31 Legendary Gem will only have a 30% chance for success in a level 30 Greater Rift and a level 32 Legendary Gem will have a 15% chance of success

Each Legendary Gem's secondary power will now also unlock at 25 (down from 200).

I need to carry around rift keys to put in the slot? It can't figure out I have 200 in my stash?

Correct. The goal is for players to be able to pull normal Rift Fragments from their inventory or stash. We will be fixing this issue at some point, which will once again allow you to pull fragments from your stash.

Edit: Additional information.

End of an Era
The maintenance for the PTR patch also brought testing of an Era. That is the name given for the period of time that relates to the resets of non-Seasonal Leaderboards. Apparently those Leaderboards will be reset at different rates in patch 2.1 than the Seasons. This presumably means that we will see multiple Eras during Season 1, which would allow more players to rank on those non-Seasonal Leaderboards.
PTR Era Ending Soon:

In preparation for PTR Season 3 (which is tentatively scheduled to begin tomorrow), we will also be concluding the first PTR "Era" today, shortly after the servers come back up. An Era indicates a period of time between resets of non-Seasonal Leaderboards. Different Eras may last for different lengths of time; there is no set duration for an Era under current design.

UI Issues with PTR Build:

The most recent PTR build, deployed today (August 12), will be launching with some UI issues. As a result, players on the PTR will not be able to see their progress for Conquests or Seasonal achievements. This UI issue is being addressed and we hope to have this resolved before too much longer. With that said, when the PTR build goes live, achievement tracking will be active.

Rimeheart Power is Boosted
The Rimeheart weapon is retroactively changing, getting a new power in patch 2.1. That power is boosted in this new patch, to a damage proc of 10,000% weapon damage.
Hello, everyone!

We've combed through all of this feedback, and created a summary to pass along. I have an update to share about Rimeheart, though, and I figured you'd all want to hear about it sooner rather than later.

Change Rimeheart's proc to:
10% chance to instantly deal 7200-9600% weapon damage as Cold to Frozen enemies

It turns out this feedback is mostly in line with what we were thinking, too. (Thanks, Druin!) In the next PTR update we're going to buff the damage proc of Rimeheart to 10,000% weapon damage. There's no longer a variable range on the damage proc value, so it'll always be the full 10k. This change will be retroactive, too, so those of you already have a Rimeheart can test it out and let us know what you think.

Thanks for all of your input in this focused feedback thread. It's been very helpful, and we'll be sure to keep reading your posts. We’ll also be sure to mention any updates that we can, and we look forward to seeing how it all goes!

Class-Specific Elemental Damage Bonuses
The bonuses on items to a specific element of damage can be very powerful when choosing a specific item and spec build. Not all elements are useful for every class, however. That is reflected in patch 2.1, where certain elemental bonuses will no longer roll for Smart Loot drops, of classes that can't fully use that element.

For the love of God can you answer us Crusaders about why we are plagued with cold items in our smart loot but we only have two cold skills and they're both spenders?

Great question! Starting in Patch 2.1.0, we will be removing +% Cold Damage from the pool of affixes for Smart Loot for the Crusader class. The affix can still roll on non-Smart Loot drops.

Can +% Poison Damage be removed from the Smart Loot for the Demon Hunter, please?

Yep! We actually removed +% Poison Damage from the Demon Hunter’s pool of Smart Loot affixes on the PTR in June, but it wasn’t included in the patch notes. This change will also go live in Patch 2.1.0 (and like the Crusader change, still allows +% Poison Damage to roll as a non-Smart Loot affix on gear).

Patch 2.1.0 PTR Known Issues
The list of known issues on the patch 2.1.0 PTR has shrunk with the latest patch, as a lot of ongoing issues were taken care of in the patch. A few more might still crop up, as the development continues through this lengthy patch test period.
Hello everyone, and welcome to the Patch 2.3.0 Public Test Realm! Below you will find the Known Issues list for our current 2.3.0 build - 33174. Please do not report bugs that you see on this list, as we already know about them, and please help out other players reporting bugs by referring them to this list.

As a reminder, this list will not list every bug that is active on the 2.3.0 PTR. What it is listed here are a select few issues -- chosen due to visibility and impact -- that are active and confirmed as bugs by Quality Assurance with verifiable steps and (in most cases) an expected fix. Just because a bug is not on this list does not mean we don't know about it! In addition, potential exploits and the like will never be listed here.

Please note that documented bugs may not always be fixed in the order in which they were reported. In some cases, we may not have a timeline for a when a bug will be fixed and some bugs may not be able to be fixed at all. If we are able to verify that a documented bug cannot be fixed, it will be removed from this list.

Thank you for your continued reports, and enjoy Diablo III!!!
