Diablo III is Running on Consoles at Blizzard

The promised PVP blog is mentioned again, not coming until the end of the year

Blizzard has long talked about the idea of porting Diablo III to a console, but they're now at the point of actually running it on unnamed consoles. In a report at Polygon, it's discussed with Blizzard's chief creative officer Rob Pardo, with comments as well by Jay Wilson.

While there are Diablo III builds running, at this point Blizzard isn't ready to announce anything. From the article:
"We're still kind of exploring it," said Blizzard executive Rob Pardo, who was recently promoted from executive vice president of game design to chief creative officer. "We've got builds up and running on it. We're hoping to get it far enough along where we can make it an official project, but we're not quite ready to release stuff about it, but it's looking pretty cool."

Diablo 3 lead designer Jay Wilson reiterated that Blizzard is still "exploring console options" and continues to "expand and add onto the game."

"The whole team is essentially working on the next big Diablo thing," Wilson told Polygon during an interview this weekend. "A lot of that stuff will show up next year at some point."
One possibility is that Blizzard can't announce any console port right now even if they wanted to, because it is running on the developer version of a next-generation console. Microsoft is widely expected to announce the successor to the Xbox 360 next year, and Sony is likely to follow with the next version of their PlayStation consoles. If those are announced next year, and released at Christmas 2013 or later, it would work well for Blizzard to already be working on a Diablo III port to take advantage of that new hardware. While this is all speculative, we'll know more once Blizzard decides to talk a bit more; perhaps by Blizzcon 2013 there will be an announcement!

In the immediate future, we can expect the "next big Diablo thing" mentioned by Jay Wilson. There is certainly a Diablo III expansion in the works, as noted in the article. That is also a ways off, though: first there are more free additions and patches to the game, with patch 1.0.7 and the eventual PVP game addition on the way. On his Twitter account, Jay Wilson posted yet again about the promised PVP blog, stating this time that we likely won't see the blog until the end of the year.

We're in a bit of a holding pattern regarding Diablo III news, but check out the Polygon article to see more tidbits, for now!
