PS3 and Xbox 360 Account Types:

If you're not familiar what each account type means, here's a basic list:

  • Primary User/Player: The player who presses Start, and is relative to a console.
  • Non-Primary User/Player: Any player who joined locally, other than the Primary User/Player.
  • Secondary User/Player:
    • PS3: A Non-Primary Player who is the first to pick a User not already used by another player, or the first to not pick a User.
    • Xbox 360: Any Non-Primary Player.

  • Shared User/Guest:
    • PS3: A Secondary Player who chose a User already used by another player. Guest on PS3 is also referred to as "Shared User."
    • Xbox 360: A player who signs in as "Guest" when the optin is available.

  • No-Profile:
    • PS3: A Secondary User who did not choose a User.
    • Xbox 360: A player who does not choose a profile. The Primary Player may be a No-Profile player.

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to take a quick moment to give everyone an update on this and to thank you all for your incredibly detailed reports. The information you provided has been very helpful to us!

We have a few changes to how we handle saved data going into the next game patch/title update and these changes should help prevent some of the data loss we have been seeing. That said, data corruption can still rarely occur due to hardware failure, improper shutdown, or other issues related to console software and storage, and these factors are outside of our control.

As we are approaching the release of our 1.0.2 Patch/Title Update (still no exact date!) and have gathered all of the information we need on this, I am going to go ahead and unsticky this thread. I want to again stress just how helpful your reports were on this, and express the sincere appreciation of the Quality Assurance and Diablo III Development teams.

Thank you!

We haven't had a lot of presence in this thread because we have gathered most of the information we needed and the changes/fixes we are able to implement have been included in patch/title update 1.0.2.

If you are using a Playstation 3 and have not yet installed the 1.0.2 patch, we suggest that you connect your console to the internet and install the update at your earliest convenience. If you are using an Xbox 360, please stay tuned as the update should be available on your platform very very soon.

Hi KingZelos,

I think maybe you misunderstood my last post. This thread is not useless, and is still the place to report new instances of data corruption. We may not give a detailed post in response to each reply, but we are still watching and reading. I want to reiterate too that based on this thread and other information we gathered, we have implemented several changes and fixes in 1.0.2. that have absolutely helped to reduce reports of this occurring, across the board.

That said, there are still a myriad of ways that data corruption can occur on computer hardware. A game console is a piece of computer hardware. A console is not foolproof or immune to failure. Hardware failure, issues with the console OS software, or improper shutoff/shutdown can absolutely cause data corruption or loss, and there is nothing we can do to "fix" that.

If you are still experiencing issues, please do continue to post in this thread about it, and be as detailed as possible. We still research new reports of this occurring, and if we can identify a new recurring issue that we are able to fix, we will do our best ot address it. While I am usually not inclined to share specific information on the results of our research, I will say that we have not been able to find any solid evidence of data loss or corruption that can be attributed to bugs in the game itself since the changes in 1.0.2 were implemented, and our research has been extensive.

I am going to lock the other thread about this, as well. We do appreciate your reports, but this thread is the place for them.

Hi Tsarnis,

Would getting a copy of the corrupted save files help at all? Maybe you can correlate a corrupt area that is common between all of them that would help determine cause?

Just a thought.

It might, but what we would really need to go with it are use cases detailing where and how failure occurred, so that we can try to find a way to reproduce said failure. Generally, looking at the data doesn't tell us much other than "yep, this data is corrupted". That said, I am not averse to such a thing and may reach out to a player from time to time to solicit such data.
