Frame rate drop!(1)Category: Technical SupportJuly-12-2013 7:06 PM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Alright so the last couple of days iv been trying to play d3 and my frame rate wont go above 23 frames per second. Now before i get hounded with questions here are some important things you should know.

1. I used to play diablo 3 on this same laptop prior to the recent patch at a frame rate of a least 30 but average was around 37 frames which was good for me.

2. I play other games like dead space series, starcraft 2, and mass effect onhigh or highest graphical settings with no issues of lag or frame rate drop.

3. I have checked my drives and did all updates possible, I have done disk clean ups, defragmentations, disk error checks, antivirus etc.

4. This was a mysterious issue around release when patches were being thrown out more frequently and for some time i had the same issue. After patch 1.02 the frames have been fine and performance was great up until now.

5. I have turned off all background applications, nothing is downloading, nothing is uploading, i am not recording anything, i am not playing music. i have 0 programs running except for D3.

6. I have even attempted to lower all settings to the bottom and tried with v sync on and off and still no difference,,, (vsync made it worse oddly enough).

7. Computer stats. 1 gb dedicated video, 8gb ram, 2,27ghz processer (with boost it reaches 2.4), windows 8 64 bit.

I repeat i have had much better frames for MONTHS before the recent patch. If there is any idea as to the performance drop please let me know. I am running out of ideas here of things to do. And id rather not reinstall the entire game.

Fleshypudge,

Can you post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it ALL here.

Could you also post your D3Prefs.txt file? It's located in the My Documents\Diablo III folder.

Fleshypudge,

I'd try updating the video drivers first. What you have now is nearly 4 years old.

Driver File Version: 8.14.0010.0716 (English)
Driver Version: 8.682.1.0
DDI Version: 11
Driver Model: WDDM 1.1
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
Driver Date/Size: 12/10/2009 04:48:02, 4684288 bytes

If Acer doesn't have any updates for your model, you can try using the reference drivers direct from AMD:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

This is a link to a driver verification tool they have. If your hardware is found to be compatible, they'll let you download the new drivers.

Also, you stated you were using Windows 8 yet your dxdiag shows you have Windows 7.

For the in-game settings, I'd recommend disabling the frame rate limiters and just have Vertical Sync enabled.

Fleshypudge ,

It looks ok but could you verify the Windows Power profile isn't set to use a balanced or power-saving mode? You want it set to High Performance.

I'd also like to see your D3Debug.txt file. It's located in the main Diablo III game folder. Edit out your account name first though. It's going to appear in a few places in the file.

Fleshypudge ,

All right, it all looks normal.

Try booting in selective startup once and playing like that for a little while and check the fps you're getting.
