Massive FPS drops when entering combat(1)Category: Technical SupportMay-20-2013 12:46 PM PDT (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hello, after a long time not playing this game i'm trying to get back into it, but that is very hard because of my FPS issue.

I can run along in the towns with no issues, but as soon as i enter combat (and it seems the bigger the creature the bigger the negative effect) my FPS drops massively.

First of all, I have tried adjusting i think every video setting in the Options. Both on their own, and combined with turning down other settings.

I maxed my foreground FPS to 60. When walking around it is around 55-60 FPS (which is perfect for me) but as soon as I enter combat it drops to around 5-25 (it goes very sporadically and it stutters massively).

Testing whether changing settings increased the FPS has been tested in Act 4 NM only at the moment.

My Hardware:
PROCESSOR : INTEL CORE I7 PROCESSOR 2630
MEMORY : 6144MB (1X2048 + 1X4096) 1333MH
HARD DRIVE: 320GB (7,200RPM) SATA HARD
GRAPHICS : 2GB GDDR5 AMD RADEON HD 6990M

To be clear, putting all settings down to the lowest doesn't solve my issue. And to be honest, I think my spec should be able to handle Diablo 3 as i could run Far Cry 3 in high settings.
Running in administrator didn't do anything for me either. Drivers all seem to be updated, although to be perfectly honest i've always had issues downloading a new driver for my Radeon.

I'm quite 'desperate' and would really appreciate help!

Belthazor,

Can you post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it ALL here.

Could you also post your D3Prefs.txt file? It's located in the My Documents\Diablo III folder.

Belthazor,

Let's try a couple of quick changes to see if we can get better performance.

With the game closed, in the D3Prefs file, please change these lines:

Vsync "0"
LowFX "1"
LimitForegroundFPS "1"
LimitBackgroundFPS "1"
ChannelsToUse "32"

to

Vsync "1"
LowFX "0"
LimitForegroundFPS "0"
LimitBackgroundFPS "0"
ChannelsToUse "16"

I was also curious, did you edit the file to tell it you had a hardware class 6 machine or is that the default the game determined you had?

Belthazor,

I'm curious, could you open your task manager (Control-alt-del), and then select Performance, then on that screen hit the Resource Monitor button near the bottom. Select the CPU tab, on the right side, you'll see windows for each cpu (regular and hyperthreaded). See if any of them say "parked" in their description.

Belthazor,

You should be seeing 8 total, starting with 0. The odd numbered ones should be the hyperthreaded cpus. I was just curious, that's all. I've always run my machines with parking for all cpus disabled. I've also never seen any degradation in performance when playing but that's not to say this is why.

Could you try running the task manager while playing the game and having both set so you can see them? This will require running the game in windowed mode and making it small enough to see the task manager too. What I'm interested in seeing is the overall cpu performance just before and after a number of monsters are encountered. I'm also looking to see if any of the load is handled by additional cpus of if everything seems to be running on just one all the time. It's going to take a little juggling to see all this but it may provide a valuable clue as to what's going on.

Belthazor,

Do you see activity increase on any of the other cpus shown when the fps drop occurs? What's the normal cpu % you see before entering combat?

Belthazor ,

There's not much I can suggest really, Everything you're describing just sounds like the laptop is encountering a sufficient load to affect it's ability to maintain the current level of performance it's giving. I've never encountered this on any of the machines I play on, but they're admittedly pretty capable desktops, even here at work and I always have a ton of other apps running in the background when I play.

For example, as I write this, I fired up the game and when just sitting in town, my cpu usage is right around 10%. It jumped up to 14% when I alt-tabbed to write in this post and back down when I brought the game back up. Portaling to an area with monsters and fighting them brought it up to around 17%. I don't know why you're seeing such high idle and load cpu usage, but it could be other apps running in the background, power-saving settings in Windows or possibly something Dell has added along those lines.

What's your cpu usage with Diablo III not running? Mines going back and forth between 0-1.

Manimal,

You've got something else going on if that hardware is giving poor performance. It's better than what I use (on paper) and I play with no issues at all. Changing the hardware class like that isn't recommended. Graphical features (eye candy) in the game will be quite limited if you do.

Morogoth,

how about suggesting they try disabling parking?

I didn't want to actually suggest doing it as I don't like telling people to go in and change settings like that. There's a lot of controversy (differing opinions) on whether parking or unparking the cpu cores has any effect at all. It's more of a personal decision than something I'd be able to recommend in here. It's ok for you to provide instructions though but I'd caution anyone contemplating doing it to do a little research first so they fully understand what they're messing with.

Back to the subject, curiously the game on my systems is using cpu core 7 pretty much exclusively. I have hyperthreading enabled, which is another of those controversial subjects as to whether it helps or hinders performance.

I tested my home system this morning before work to see if my cpu usage was in-line with what I reported for my work system yesterday. It was lower actually, though at home, I'm not running a lot of other apps at the same time. I fired up a second system at home that uses a pair of ATI HD5870s and an i7 920 to compare numbers. It suffered no issues at all, though the cpu usage was marginally higher at 13% instead of 9.

Marcoz,

There have been quite a few reports like this but I've not been able to find out what's causing it so far. In many of the cases, it's attributable to lower-end hardware being used but you've got a top-end system and it should have no trouble.

I'd like to see what else is running on your system when you're playing the game.

Could you download a utility called What's Running from http://whatsrunning.net/ ? Get the latest beta 3.0 release. It seems to run ok on Win 8 here when I test it.

Start the game up and leave your character sitting in town, then alt-tab out and run the utility (you'll probably need to run it as an administrator) and after it's finished resolving connections, use the take a snapshot feature. Send me that file via an email to: ForumTech@Blizzard.com attn: Omrakos

reference this thread in your email to me.

The file just contains a list of processes and services along with hardware info currently running on the computer.

Marcoz,

There's a few apps you have running that i'd like you uninstall but only if you know you can reinstall them again later if you need them still.

GameCompanion
Asus' AI Suite II
Punk Buster
GPUTweak
AMD's Dual-Core Optimizer (why is this installed?)

Once these are all removed, reboot and retest the game to see if the performance has improved.

Marcoz ,

It's probably harmless and seems it's obsolete in Windows7 and later operating systems. You may have gotten it from installing Duke Nukem Forever as I believe they add it by default.

Let's get rid of it anyways.

It'll work with what Microsoft uses as far as it being recognized as a regular mouse, the extra buttons won't function for now though.

Marcoz,

Can you describe how and where in the game you're testing the performance? Are you using the in-game fps display (Control-R)?

What character level and class are you using? Which area in which act?

Is your GTX 680 configured to use SLI? Can you try with it disabled?

Marcoz,

A GTX 680 is a dual-GPU card. Check the Nvidia Control Panel and see if you can disable SLI if it's enabled.

I'm testing with my CM wizard in Fields of Misery as well. MP5 and I can't mine to reproduce what you're seeing no matter what I mess with.

Ack, You're right. I use a pair of 670s at home and for some reason was thinking the next one up was the dual card. Forget all that. But while in the control panel, can you go ahead and use the reset to defaults button and retest?

Marcoz,

The BIOS for your model motherboard as you know has a whole host of overclocking and tweaking options, way too many for me to try go over with you in here. I'd ask that you just use their "Auto" settings for everything right now.

Also, could you start up the task manager, then start up the game and get a character into town. Then alt-tab out to look at the task manager again. Under processes, locate the entry for Diablo III .exe and right click it. Check the values for affinity and priority. Is it set to allow all processors and "normal" priority?
