FPS Drops(1)Category: Technical SupportApril-24-2013 6:11 PM PDT (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
So I have a computer that runs Skyrim, CS:GO, League of Legends, and Diablo3 (at one point in time) perfectly fine on highest settings @ 2560x1440 and or 1980x1080. I get a constant 60 fps (with v sync on) or ~100-120 (with v sync off, but its very jittery so I keep it on). But ever since ive come back to start playing again I get constant FPS drop for no reason. I will literally just being moving from one area to another (with nothing happening, no mobs no fighting) and I have my FPS showing with ctrl+R in the bottom of the screen, and then out of nowhere every 15-20 seconds my game will just freeze for 1-3 seconds. After the freeze happens I can instantly look at the FPS and it shows it drop to single digits then shoot back up to 60.

Things I have tried :
1. Every possible combination of audio/video settings (ingame and NVidia control panel).
2. Deleting the d3pref folder over and over and over
3. Setting my HardwareClass in d3pref to 1-6
4. Playing in Full screen, then playing in Full screen windowed, then playing in just windowed.
5. Tried 5 different monitors @ several different resolutions.
6. Running as Admin / not as admin.
7. Updated video card drives / went back to old versions etc..
8. Used wireless headphones, used wired headphones, used speakers, used monitor speakers (3 different pairs), disabled/enabled every possible combination of sounds options my PC has (realtek / Logitech g930 / etc..)
9. Changed all different power options on/off etc..

After all this it still does it. I play a Hardcore CM Wizard and I cannot even play the game without other people being in a party with me, and even then its extremely frustrating and not even worth playing if you freeze every 10-20 seconds. I basically play the auction house game atm until blizzard fixes this.

I really would like to actually play Diablo 3 not the Diablo 3 Auction House.

Gonfar,

2. Deleting the d3pref folder over and over and over
3. Setting my HardwareClass in d3pref to 1-6

Doing this will cause unpredictable results. You should leave them alone with whatever the game has decided is correct for your hardware.

Set your Nvidia Control Panel settings back the the factory default for now.
Delete the D3Prefs file once again so the game will use the default values. Don't manually edit it unless we've suggested you do.

Please post your dxdiag info.

You can generate your dxdiag info by using the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it ALL here.

Gonfar,

There's very little I can suggest that hasn't already been suggested. You never actually confirmed that you did as I asked so I'll ask again,

"Set your Nvidia Control Panel settings back the the factory default for now.

I play on similar hardware as you here at the office. An Intel I7 975, only 6 gig ram and a GTX 580 and have no issues to speak of. Maybe a little stuttering if I play in windowed mode but it's smooth when playing full screen. I'm on Windows 7 though, not Windows 8.

As a tech, if your system was brought to me for troubleshooting this problem, the first thing I'd do is remove your hard drive, stick in a spare, and do a fresh install of Windows 7, it's updates, driver updates, and Diablo III and then test the game for problems. I'd install nothing else and change none of the factory settings for anything, leaving it all stock.

The above scenario isn't something the average user can do so it's not anything I ever suggest, but that's what I'd do if it were in front of me. It sounds like you might be able to though if you have a copy of Windows 7 to use.

I'd also ask if you ever ran any benchmarks on your SSD to make sure it's been set up correctly? Are you using one of the two Marvel 6Gb/s SATA ports (GSATA3_6, GSATA3_7) on your motherboard to run it?
