Friend List Question(1)Category: GeneralApril-15-2013 7:53 PM PDT (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hey all,

So I was wondering, why can I see some of my friends on StarCraft 2 but not on Diablo 3? I see my friend is online on SC2, but when I log in D3, he isn't even in my friend list.

Just a few quick questions for you (so I can understand what's going on a little better):

1) For clarity, you can see the player in question in your Friends List when you're logged into SC2, but not when you're logged into D3?

2) Which game is your friend playing in this example: SC2 or D3?

3) Is the player you're referring to a Real ID or BattleTag friend, or he just a game-level friend? (I.E. Where in your Friends List does he show up whenever you see him online?)

Thanks!

You can only see friends who are real ID friends from other games.

Both Real ID and BattleTag friends are (or should be) supported cross-game.

My battletag friends that I added in SC2 that do not show in WoW and D3, regardless of what game they are playing.

My battletag friends that I added in D3 that show in WoW, D3, and SC2, no matter what game they are playing.

My real ID friends that I added in any of the 3 show in all of the 3, no matter what game they are playing.

It seems like somehow SC2 battletag friends get treated differently from the other two by bnet.

Just passed this off to our QA team. If hear anything back (even if it's "yeah, this is a known issue"), I'll let you know.

1) Yes

2) SC2

3) game-level friend

Hm. The fact that the player is only a game-level friend is probably why you can't see him playing StarCraft II while you're playing Diablo III.

In order to see friends that are logged into other games than what you're currently playing, they need to be either a Real ID or BattleTag friend. If someone is just a game-level friend, you'll only be able to see them playing when you're logged into the same game they are.

Well I added his BattleTag after clicking the "Character Friend" section. It doesn't mention them remaining as game-level friends though.

Did you add his BattleTag while you were logged into SC2 or D3?

SC2

Got it. Sounds like it might be related to the same issue silverfire described. I forwarded that on to our QA team and will let you know when/if I hear back. :)

Our QA team got back to me, and while there is an issue with your own BattleTag not displaying correctly in SC2, the cross-game support seems to be working just fine. Our QA rep actually just tested out this functionality by adding a couple of BattleTag friends using the SC2 client, and they were visible in all other games.

So, Cruzoik, TwoCoins, and silverfire, I've got a follow-up question for you:

When you were adding players to your Friends List in SC2, are you sure it was their BattleTag IDs you used and not their SC Character IDs? Character IDs have 3 digits and BattleTag IDs have four digits. (Also, in SC2, to add a BattleTag friend, you go through the same interface as if you were adding a Real ID friend.)

Thanks!

I believe it was the 3-digit character ID now that you mention it. It's been a while since I've used the SC2 interface.

I guess the reason that it's easy to miss this is, as far as I'm concerned, the only action I take is, right click on the user's name, they get added to my friends list. In SC2, this process immediately adds them as a character ID friend. In diablo 3, this opens up the battletag ID friend prompt, and then adds them as a battletag ID friend assuming that they accept.

It's more than a little confusing. The only process that should concern the players is the right click, add to friends part. Not what type of ID is being used to add them.

Thanks for the follow up, and for the feedback too. I can understand how the process of adding a friend (and making sure you add them to the right category) might be unclear, especially for SC2 which has both Character IDs and BattleTags. I'll make sure I pass this along to the right people on both D3 and SC2. If you have any other issues with adding friends or communicating with them across games, let me know!

It's probably a region thing. I, for example, am in SEA in SC2 and the Americas in D3. I can see friends when I'm logged into D3 that I can't see when on SC2.

Yup. With Global Play (which is available for both SC2 and D3), you can have different sets of characters in different gameplay regions. Friends Lists are also unique to each region, so that means if you're logged in to the Americas, you'll only be able to see and communicate with friends that you added in that region.
