I'm afraid to play,is this normal? My GPU...(1)Category: Technical SupportMarch-4-2013 7:19 PM PST (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hey, everyone! I could use some help...

So about a year and a half ago I bought this Studio XPS desktop PC. Everything SEEMS to be running great... However, I always noticed that the PC was loud, specifically the fans. A friend of mine even commented about it the first month I had it, curious if it was running hot?? Aside from being a little annoying, everything ran fine... So I thought nothing of it.

Anyway, I've always played D3 without any issues at release, along with other titles. I took some time off from the game and was meaning to start up playing it again. However, I just recently discovered the "Catalyst Control Center" program which comes with my Video Card and it displays the GPU temperature real time (not sure how accurate, if anyone else can attest?)

Well, I've always heard that 40C - 50C was normal for PCs while idol and that below 100 degrees C was considered "safe" -- anything above can damage the card. After discovering this program, I realized (as far as accuracy goes) that my card runs about 60-65C while idol, surfing the web, but what is troubling to me is that upon launching D3, the temps jump to 90+ C and I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned about? I don't know if it's always ran that hot or what...

Just yesterday, I decided to open the case and give it a good clean from dust (there was a fair amount, nothing too bad) so I cleaned it using some compressed air and cue tips. But this didn't seem to affect the temps... So I'm wondering is this normal? Safe? I'm afraid to play D3 now because I don't exactly have the money to afford a new GPU/PC.

My system specs are as follows:

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz
RAM: 8.2 GB
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1 (build 7601), 64-bit
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
Pixel Shader version 5.0
Vertex Shader version 5.0
Dedicated Video RAM 1.0 GB
Sounds: AMD High Definition Audio Device
Over 900 Gigs of free storage space

Everything is up to date in terms of drivers and software. My PC is clean of malware as far as I know... I keep it in pretty good shape. Could anyone assist with their knowledge? Thanks!

*Edit*
Also, as far as I know the GPU is not overclocked, I haven't done so. Unless it was done during manufacturing? I keep the fans on Auto.

NightBlade,

It shouldn't be getting that hot when playing really.

When you cleaned the computer out inside, did you clean out any dust buildup on the video card's cooling fan? That's where it usually gets caked so bad it affects the card's cooling.

Other than being sure the card itself is cooled properly, you can use the Catalyst program to force it to run the fan at a higher rpm instead of letting it run at the default setting. You can also use a setting in the game to cap the fps limit to a lower rate so as not to heat up the card so much. I'd start with a number like 30 or so and see how much cooler it runs and increase it slowly afterwards to find a good balance between cooling and noise output.
