Smoke/dust clouds overlap everything else in game(1)Category: Technical SupportJuly-20-2013 12:48 PM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
I've been directed here after opening a ticket yesterday, so I think the most productive thing to do would be to post the conversation here. I don't know how to post the pictures mentioned in the conversation, but can provide them if asked:

Me:
I updated my graphics card drivers today, and ever since, I've noticed that a couple of things in game seem to be rendering at the wrong depth. I've attached a screenshot of some fog in Dalgur Oasis showing through the ground, which should actually be much further back on the map, and well below ground level. Another example I've noticed is the dust kicked up by Lacuni Huntresses when they emerge from the ground - the part of the dust which SHOULD be invisible underground is showing as above ground. I'm really frustrated by this and I don't know what to do about it, as it was perfectly fine before.
On another note, I've been struggling for so long to eliminate the microstuttering that the game seems to have sometimes. I've disabled my antivirus, changed settings in the Catalyst Control Centre, deleted my cache, deleted and edited my D3Prefs file, played around with my ingame settings (Vsync, Fullscreen, Shadows, Physics, etc...), along with several other little things, but NOTHING seems to work. During these periods of microstuttering, my FPS remains at 60, so it's nothing to do with needing to lower my settings - especially as these microstuttering episodes are at random times, often when there's nothing intensive going on graphics wise. I've browsed many forums and seen many, MANY people complaining about this exact problem, some many months ago, and I was wondering if Blizzard are working to fix this, as it's very disappointing that it's been happening for such a long time.
Hopefully you will be able to help me,
Thanks,
Jack

Hello there,
Thank you for contacting us.
If this issue is arising after an update to your graphics drivers, then the two are most likely directly related. Could you please try to either update your drivers to the Beta version drivers, or perhaps roll them back to the previous version to see if this has any effect on the issue?
Of course, if there's anything else we can help with, please feel free to let us know and we'll be happy to assist further.
Kind regards

Me:
Okay, will try that, but what about the second part of the ticket?
Update: I've just updated to the latest Beta drivers and the problem is still there.
Update 2: Used the Roll Back option, and the issue is still there.

Hello Jack
The first thing I advise you is to run the launcher, click on Options and then on Reset Game Preferences. As soon as you will run the game, please check the game options and make sure they are set up in the way you want them.
Once done, start a game and check if you still have the problems you had before; if you do, then proceed with more advanced things such as this one:
- Exit the game completely
- Locate the folder /documents/DiabloIII
- Edit the file D3Prefs.txt with notepad
- Find the line HardwareClass "<number>"
- Change it in HardwareClass "1" or "3" no matter which number is there
- Close, save the file and restart Diablo 3
Your video card seems to be fine for Diablo. The micro stuttering can be related to the way Diablo 3 data from the Hard Drive or by the video card itself.
The best performances can be achieved with an SSD drive, but also a normal one can be fine. Make sure to Defragment your drive in order to compact data and achieve the best performances in order to solve issue #1
I honestly can't see anything wrong from the screenshot you sent, regarding the fog, it looks ok for me, but if you say there's a problem appearing after the driver update, make sure to uninstall them with the cleanup utility, and reinstall them again, perhaps also an older version.
For the micro stuttering, enable the vSync in the game options and also in the Catalyst drivers panel. The vSync option must be always enabled with the Triple Buffering - http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6368648176 - this thread may be useful too.
This should cover both the problems you have had and as for now I can't think of any other suggestions. Please drop a line in the Diablo 3 Forums if you still run into problems because it's possible also that is something that needs to be looked into by developers. Thanks!

Me:
Hi again,
I tried deleting the D3Prefs file - that didn't work. I then used the AMD Catalyst Install Manager to delete everything AMD related from the PC, which required a restart - was this deleting the drivers? I'm really not sure, as when I rebooted the PC, everything still looked fine, the desktop wasn't using bad pixelated graphics like I expected it to with no drivers? Anyway, I installed the latest drivers again, and the problem still persists.
Also, the game is installed on an SSD, and the suggestions you made about vSync and Triple Buffering are already in place, yet the game still stutters (but this isn't as important to me right now as fixing this graphics problem).
Would reinstalling the game do anything?
Really concerned about this now, it's really frustrating, what can I do?
Thanks,
Jack

Step 2) follow the steps here https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/showing-hidden-files-and-folders-pc To make sure hidden files\folders are shown. Now go to the folder: C:\ProgramData\
In that folder delete the battle.net folder and blizzard or blizzard entertainment folder
Step 3) follow the steps here https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/run-in-administrator-mode
and now run the game via the launcher and you should no longer have any issues :)
Please only reopen\respond back to this issue if you still have problems, if everything is fine then there is no need to respond to this issue.
Regards

Me:
Hi there,
I just followed the steps as instructed, and I'm afraid it's still exactly the same... =/
I've taken another screenshot to illustrate the problem again. As you can see in this less obvious example, the bottom half of the steam which shouldn't be visible is showing through the wooden deck. It's a lot easier to see how obvious it is in game when moving around - a big random blob of steam that overlaps everything.
Please help!
