How do you deal with bad luck?(1)Category: GeneralFebruary-5-2015 12:31 PM PST (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
I have bad luck. This isn't really a whine post, but I want to give you some background so you understand what I'm talking about. I spent basically the entirety of season/era 1 grinding out rifts etc so I could get a Furnace. I played a bit on my Crusader, and some on my DH, but about 80% on my monk. I've honestly been trying to get a Furnace since ROS hit, but I really buckled down and focused on grinding as much as possible after season 1 started.

I finally got one at paragon ~620 (or so, don't really remember). First Furnace ever... and it was garbage. My decent crafted ancient Sunder is much better. Now I'm back in the same boat with Incense Torch (although I have put nearly 500 hours into my monk since ROS launched - before ROS I played Barbarian only) and I have never seen a single one. In fact, there's quite a few items I've never seen - more than half of the immunity amulets, one or two fist weapons, Madstone, etc.

If it was just the case that I hadn't gotten a GOOD version of the items I've been trying to get, I wouldn't really feel discouraged - at least they are dropping. But my friends who play monk all managed to get Torch to drop, even if it wasn't a great roll. My brother switch to playing monk about 1.5 weeks ago and in less than a week, got an ancient Torch so good that it's currently 3rd NA softcore on diablo3ladder. And I'm still here, 10 months and 465 paragon levels later, with a single Furnace drop, no Incense Torch, no Madstone...

I'm playing the best version of the build I want to play that I can manage WITHOUT an Incense Torch, but at this point, I don't know what else to do. For monks there is a BEST BUILD - and you need an Incense Torch. Is there some strategy to getting items that I'm missing? I'm mostly just doing GRs around 30-35, as it's more rewarding than grinding out T6 rifts (and less boring frankly).

There are some great strategies here for continuing to pursue gearing goals when faced with bad luck, especially ockamdesign's idea about playing with a group (so their good luck rubs off on you), and normalice's idea of accepting the bad with the good.

I've certainly had good and bad streaks of luck before. As long as I'm enjoying the build that I'm playing, though, it's easier to accept that luck isn't on my side, and that things may turn around soon. Almost inevitably, when I change my perspective and focus on simply enjoying the game, I've found that good luck tends to follow.

While I'm in the middle of a bit of a bad luck streak right now (Kadala won't give me Pride's Fall), I'm sure my luck will turn around soon. Hope yours does too, bigtexasdan!

I'm sure she'd give you one if she had one, but you're going to have to speak to Tyreal about that one. =P

(Pride's Fall is a bounty cache reward)

Wow! How did I miss that detail?

Just so you can all get a good laugh (because I sure did), I'm totally having one of these moments.

On the downside, I'm down aboooout a couple thousand Blood Shards. On the plus side, I now know which Act I'll be farming later for Horadric Caches (and that I should do a little research before posting).

Thanks for helping me realize the error of my ways, guys!

I actually got a Prides Fall and salvaged it. Looked useless for a barb.

It's mainly helpful to people who regularly use resource intensive ranged attacks - for example, a Demon Hunter or a Witch Doctor who keep their distance while using their pets to soak up damage. Since its special ability kicks in after you avoid taking damage for 5 seconds, you have to be good at playing "keep away" to really benefit from it.

As a nice side note, I managed to get one off a Horadric Cache yesterday (thanks to the folks who steered me in the right direction). After a quick run to the Mystic, I put it on my DH and tried tackling a Greater Rift. In the end, I managed to finish at Greater Rift 41 - four levels higher than my previous personal best.

In the end, although my luck did take a turn for the worse (no thanks to my own ignorance), it did turn around, in an odd way.

Thanks for "nudging" it in the right direction, guys. :)
