New Machine - lag then crash(1)Category: Technical SupportSeptember-13-2014 11:21 AM PDT (8 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hey guys, i recently got a new pc:

specs:
Motherboard: z97x gaming 3
Ram Vengence 16gb
Zotac 780 GTX Nvida
main hdd (which has d3): 240gb Hyper fury SSD
i7-4790K @4.0ghz
using win 8.1

Basically every now and again (during rifts mainly), my games freezes and glitches between desktop and game where the only solution is to restart. Diablo 3 is the only game I play ATM and its the only game installed.

If you need any more info let me know, drivers upto date.

Kimpton,

That type message can occur if another app is trying to use the display and it's interfering with Diablo III's use of it. The other day for example, I was testing running World of Warcraft at the same time as Diablo III. Launching both at the same time caused this message to appear for me, though launching them in a staggered fashion worked fine.

Your hardware is nearly identical to what I use at home.

i7-4790k (closed-loop watercooled)
Gigabyte Z97 motherboard (GA-Z97X-UD7 TH)
16 gig Corsair DDR3-2400
Samsung 850 Pro 256 meg SSD
EVGA GTX 780
Windows 8.1

It's been completely stable for me and I play a lot of Diablo III on it.

How are you cooling your cpu? I hope you aren't trying to use the factory cooler?

Kimpton,

I've also seen the "an error has occurred resetting D3D" message when the user is using an HDTV instead of a regular computer monitor, but it's usually associated with starting the game, not something that would happen in the middle of playing.

Try booting in selective startup once and playing like that for a little while and see if it happens again.

Unfortunately, it's best if a problem occurs fairly often in order to troubleshoot it. Otherwise, you have to make a change and test long enough to decide if what you changed helped or not.
