I know this will most likely get redirected, but I kinda don't know what category to put this one in.

So when I'm playing something with 3d graphics (All I ever play is D3, and Hearthstone) after a bit my comp goes black. LEDs on the mouse and tower are still going but the monitor goes into powersave mode, everything is unresponsive. Upon restart I get the dreaded blue screen and I have to power the entire tower down and start it back up to get it to boot the OS. I've ran Memtest and it gets to 19% pass and it'll blank out again. I've tested all the ram and all seems good. Comptemp says my core is at and average of 35c but Furmark says I my core is at a constant 95c. I've narrowed the field down to either the PSU, Video Card, or it's just getting too hot while I'm in game. I've also Updated my Video Card drivers and ran anti-virus and spy/ad ware scans, along with defrag.

Here are my specs from the beta profile.

Make/Model:
Dell Studio XPS 7100
Operating System:
Windows7
CPU Type:
AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor
CPU Speed:
3.21 GHz
System Memory:
8.59 GB
Video Card Model:
ATI Radeon HD 5670
Video Card Memory:
4.27 GB
Video Card Driver:
aticfx32.dll
Desktop Resolution:
1600x900
Hard Disk Size:
987.01 GB
Hard Disk Free Space:
854.65 GB (87%)
Download Speed:
1.72 MB/s (13.8 mbps)

I got my comp about 3yrs ago, so I know stuff is going to pop out here and there. If I could get a hand it would be much appreciated.

You need to figure out what' going on here. I've never heard of or used Comptemp and as far as I recall, Furmark is only going to show you your gpu temp, not the cpu, which is usually identified with the term "core" as there are often more than 1.

Download and run HWMonitor from: http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/1.24-setup.exe

Let the computer sit idle for a few minutes and see what the highest temperature is that was reached for both the cpu and gpu. You can read the values right from the utility's display, there's no need to cut and paste anything here, but if you can't figure out what the display is showing, you can take a screenshot and upload it to a hosting site and then post the link.

If you're running a ram test and it blanks out, my guess is overheating but it's likely to be the cpu, not the gpu..

GwaveWobber,

It looks like it's your video card then that's overheating. It's sitting at 90 C when idle which is pretty bad. You should expect it to be more like 30C-40C or so and then jump up to maybe 60C-70C under load.

If you're comfortable doing so, remove the power from the computer, open it up, and remove the video card. Using a can of compressed air, carefully clean out the fan and heatsink assembly. Don't hold the can upside down or liquid may be sprayed that will quickly dry, but it's not a good idea to be spraying it around.

When done, put it back in and make sure any external power connections it uses are securely fastened. With the cover still off, apply power for a minute or so and make sure the fan on the card is spinning strongly. If it looks ok, shut it down, button everything up and run the temp test I just had you run and let's see if we made it any better.

GwaveWobber,

You can try to fix it yourself, but honestly, if the fan has stopped, you should send it in if it's under warranty. It's possible to find the correct replacement fans if you look hard enough usually but most often, it's better to upgrade to a newer card.
