NY/NJ/CT D3 Verizon FIOS players I need your help(1)Category: GeneralJuly-31-2014 2:11 PM PDT (8 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
@Forum Mods:
Please leave this post in the General Discussion Forum as I am not attempting anything malicious nor am I attempting to violate code of conduct. This thread is a request for help and information gathering from the D3 player community. In order to gather information and help from the community high visibility is required. Thank you. Your kindness is appreciated.

My current ISP is Cablevision (in New York City) but I'm considering a switch to Fios (either the 50/50 or 75/75 internet package). Before I make a decision to switch to Fios I need to gather some information. Would you guys/gals be kind enough to post honestly about your experience playing D3 on Fios over the past 8 months (Jan to Aug)? Do you frequently encounter lag/latency? Do you encounter long load screen times? Do you encounter long load screens if you teleport to another player in-game or teleport between different acts in the game? What is the usual latency value range when hovering your mouse over the latency meter in-game? Also, I compiled a small list of D3 game server IP addresses:
  • 199.108.32.94
  • 199.108.32.114
  • 199.108.32.42
  • 199.108.32.45
  • 12.130.246.190
  • 12.130.246.191
  • 199.108.32.102

Could you guys do a trace route to one of the game servers above and paste the trace route in your post. Please don't all pick the first IP address in the list. Doing a trace route does not require you to be in-game or have the Battle.net launcher open. To do a trace route in Windows (Win 95, 98, NT, XP, Vista, Win-7, Win-8) do the following:
(all items to be typed in below that have quotes should be typed in without quotes)
1 - Click the Start button.
2 - Choose Run.
3 - Type "cmd.exe" (without quotes) in the pop-up dialog and press enter.
4 - Type "c:" press enter.
5 - Type "cd c:\" press enter.
6 - Type "tracert 199.108.32.45 > tracert_info.txt" press enter.
** The IP address in step #6 was taken randomly from the game server IP list above. Step #6 might take 2-3 minutes to complete **
7 - Type "notepad tracert_info.txt" press enter.
8 - Copy the contents from notepad and paste it into a reply to this thread along with answers to the questions above.

On Windows 7, if you don't have the Run option on the Start menu then type "cmd" into the search box and Windows 7 will find it for you.

At the end of step #7 a notepad window with the results of the trace route should be shown. "Tracert" is the traceroute command on Windows. I don't use a Mac but I'm pretty sure there is a traceroute utility on the Mac platform. I'm also sure there is a notepad (text editor) equivalent on the Mac platform. For those who are unfamiliar with running traceroutes I've provided an example of what the output will look like below:

Tracing route to 12.130.246.191 over a maximum of 30 hops

BossDogg,

Collecting info for the purpose of making a purchasing decision is fine, but please, let's not turn the discussion into one of pointing blame at other companies for whatever reasons you may have. If that sort of thing continues, I'll have no choice but to lock or delete the thread.

Personally, I have FIOS at home in southern Ca and love it. However, for simultaneous gaming and other bandwidth tasks going on in my household, I've found the vendor supplied router was not up to the task. I instead employ a Smoothwall router which is basically another computer running with two nics and a custom, free Linux OS (Smoothwall) that allows much more flexibility and throughput.

This is just my personal observation, but on the rare occasion, twice in the last 8 or so years, when the router went down and I needed to use the vendor's router temporarily, the performance and stability was noticeably worse than what Smoothwall was giving me.

SilverFox,

Are you sure about this? I've only been reading where they're going to limit mobile users in certain situations. Could you please link the article you're referring to?

Silverfox,

Did you note the date on that article? 2011/02/03 It's more than 3 years old.

I think what you're referring to is a recent story where Verizon has stated they are indeed limiting some mobile users. This doesn't affect people using FIOS though.

Korbendallas,

"Are you running 3.1 ?"

I'm not sure what you're referring to?

As for bridging the Verizon router, I'm not doing that. Mine is just sitting on the shelf not in use at all.

A good article to browse would be this one on DSLReports: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios

Lots of good info in there when it comes to playing around with your FIOS setup.

and here's a link to a search query on bridging from within their forum: http://www.dslreports.com/nsearch?boardlist=257&cat=remark&advanced=1&257=1&p=10&o=r&q=bridging

edit * I re-read your question and figured out you were asking about which Smoothwall release I'm on. I believe it's 3.1 but I'll have to double check that tonight when I get home.

2nd edit * yes, I'm using the 3.1 release of Smoothwall currently.
