I was curious, I was going to start another hardcore character. What do most people play on normal, hard, master etc. Does it really count as hardcore if your starting on the easiest level. Do people bump it up after a while? Thanks just wondering.

All depends how fast mobs die.
Honestly, the quicker you kill mobs the more efficient farming is.

Raising the difficulty is pretty much just gaining more experience. You won't gain much progress in gear if you're not killing quickly.

Do bounties at low difficulty and when you have a lot of fragments start doing rifts in higher difficulties you're comfortable with. Shards spent on Kadala's gambling has a fair chance of finding Legends. Sometimes you won't get anything, but the risk isn't that great.

Adding to this, if you ever find yourself plateauing – like, it’s too easy on one difficulty, but too difficult on the next – try engaging Adventure Mode at whichever level is maybe a bit uncomfortable. Instead of going after the Bounties or entering the Rifts, just port to a wide open area and start to clear the mobs out making sure to keep your exit path clear. I was doing that this morning in a Torment level I wasn’t used to and it was working out real well.
