Diablo III Freezing Computer While Idling(1)Category: Technical SupportMay-31-2014 3:37 PM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hello,

Recently, I have noticed that Diablo has been freezing my computer while the game is idling in the background. I've changed the game settings to better allow the game to idle (background fps turned up, lowered settings, etc.), however, the game still freezes my computer.

Of course, what I am saying is a rather broad statement and what leads me to believe this is that I can leave several other games open, idling, and I've not had an issue. I've tested this by specifically leaving multiple games idle while in the background or I do something on my other screen.

Every time I leave Diablo III open in the background it freezes my computer within 5-10 minutes or in the case of opening Hearthstone with Diablo III running, immediately.

Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Redbeard,

There's no reason you should be seeing this happen due to the game.

How do you recover from the PC freezing?

Can you post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

Click on Start
Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it ALL here.

Could you also post your D3Prefs.txt file? It's located in the My Documents\Diablo III folder.

Redbeard,

"DisplayModeRefreshRate "144""

I don't know that this refresh rate is actually being used in the game right now. While troubleshooting, can you set it to 60 to match your desktop refresh?

Besides that, I'd start by rebooting in selective startup mode and running like that for a while with the game in the background and see if it still freezes.
