Taking Raekor toss to the next level(1)Category: HardcoreMay-30-2014 8:55 AM PDT (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
So after losing my leaper barb recently (no tears, elite no.23k had her number) I decided to really concentrate on making a Raekor toss barb while I wait for a new EQ set. I was initially skeptical of the set's potential but after a few days devoted to it this has changed to qualified optimism. I've been playing mostly T3 until I feel confident in the gameplay, but I do feel it has T4-6 potential. So here are some of my observations so far and I invite any other suggestions and critiques. Mostly, as North2, MrWinkles and others have tried to do, I want to encourage HC barbs to take a second look at the Raekor set.

My current setup:

Cons:

1. Full Raekor set takes up a minimum of 4 slots, so it really narrows your options for other set bonuses. If you run full IK as I am currently, then you have no other gear slots free aside from bracer and jewelry. If you use IK boulder breaker, then you get one slot free besides bracer and jewelry.

2. Furious charge is pretty sloppy to use and can be dangerous if you get stuck in the middle of a mob obviously.

3. Damage potential is inconsistent and extremely bursty. Weakness is usually against single target.

4. Hands down, leapquake will be more efficient in clear times.

Pros:

1. Even though full raekor requires 4 slots with rorg, its the only barb set that gives you extra stats (500str/500vit). In addition, raekor gear pieces are easier to roll well compared to EQ pieces and they drop more frequently. I feel much more "solid" ehp wise compared to when I was using EQ where I felt constantly starved for either all res, vit, cdr, or dps mods. Using only 4 out of 6 possible pieces means you also have more flexibility to use your best four as opposed to 3/4 of the more rare EQ set. I had 23m toughness at one point without really optimizing for it.

2. Furious charge gameplay gets better with practice. Its actually a really fun skill once you get better with it. Its still clumsy compared to precision leaping, but it has a variety of "moves" that make it refreshing to play. For instance, you can do what I call the "sweeper" move where you push a stray mob back into a larger clump. Great thing about charge is that it can move all elites except rift gaurdians, so you can move champs out of dangerous ground effects. You can keep a pack of elites stunlocked as long as your charge gets reset each time.

3. Furious charge does respectable damage for me, around 12-20m crits, but its all about the boulder toss. Your toss damage will be as consistent as your fury gain. I have 212-234 fury in my globe. Using ancient spear/doombringer, a full toss would crit for 150-200m. BUT, using IK boulder breaker allows me to use harrington. Without the harrington buff, IK boulder breaker crits for around 100-150m, but with the buff, I can crit for over 300m. Highest I've seen so far is 368m with wrath insanity on as well.

4. Leapquake is always going to be more efficient, but perma-cota helps with some of the weaknesses. They give more consistent single target dps, they give more consistent fury gen. At higher torment they can give you 50% damage reduction. Switching from ancient's fury to together as one shouldn't impact the build too much. Using reapers wraps, I get 70+ fury per globe.

5. Sustain is not an issue. I have 2k life per fury spent (another plus for the IK boulder breaker). A full toss will heal me for over 400k life. This helps a lot when you charge into the middle of a mob and take a lot of damage. One toss and you will heal up and you are ready to charge out if need be.

TLDR- raekor toss not as bad as I feared. I can crit for 360m with IK boulder breaker!

Nice write up on the Raekor 5 set. I've been in love with Furious Charge from the very beginning, but I tend to prioritize visceral combat above efficiency. Thanks for putting this together, and I enjoyed reading it.
