NOT SO Random FPS Drops(1)Category: Technical SupportApril-30-2014 11:23 AM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
So, I have 2 gaming computers. One I built from scratch a few months ago, and one laptop I have had for about 2 years. The laptop is where my frustration lies and the desktop runs just fine. I have an Alienware M17xR3 with a GTX 460M NVidia graphics card. I have 16GB of ram and a SSD running Diablo 3.

No matter what settings I choose in video, the performance is exactly the same. I run fine for exactly 36 seconds with beautiful graphics and game play (55 to 60 FPS), then for 2 minutes and 45 seconds, the gameplay/graphics goes to crap at 11 to 12 FPS. It is on a timer and I don't have to play at all! I can just sit in town, and this behavior is like clock work! no other game does this and runs just fine. I only have issues with D3.

So, my question is why does it only run fine for 0:36 seconds at a time and poorly for 2:45??

PS: Yes, I actually used a stopwatch on my phone to time the issue.

I would love for a BLUE to respond to this as the forums are full of "ignored" responses to the FPS problem.

Poultergeist,

My guess would be something on your system is kicking in that's consuming resources to the point performance is impacted.

Try booting in selective startup once and playing like that for a little while and see if it happens again.

Poultergeist,

It's unlikely to be heat-related if it's occurring on such a regular schedule.

Could you try the following?

Bring up your Task manager and set it to display processes and sort by memory usage. Size it to display as many processes as you can.

Screenshot it with whatever method you typically use for such things. You can use Alt-Printscreen and paste it into Paint and save it as a jpeg file if you don't use another app.

Start the game in windowed mode so you can see both the game and the Task Manger still.

Screenshot the Task manager again right after starting the game.

Then after 36 seconds, when I assume the game will have slowed down, grab a last screenshot of the Task manager.

Upload all three shots to an image hosting site and post the link(s) or inspect them yourself and see if a task that wasn't there in the second screenshot is there in the third, consuming resources.

Lastly, I suppose it could be a simple matter of having a power saving mode enabled in Windows too. Make sure you have that set to the High Performance mode, not Balanced.

xvxmichael ,

You have an FPS slowdown exactly 36 seconds after starting the game?

Poultergeist,

Did you check the Windows Power profile and make sure it's set to High Performance?

Do you have any other apps open that might be using accelerated video such as a Flash player in a browser window or anything like that?

Does your Alienware model have their Stealth Mode? That's a special proprietary mode for power saving that basically slows things down to save power.

Poultergeist ,

What are you using to monitor the GPU clock speed? Do you have Nvidia's GeForce Experience app installed? What video driver release are you running?

Poultergeist ,

Can you see if uninstalling EVGA's app does anything to help? And I'd try setting the Experience app to not do anything unless it asks for permission first and then don't allow it if it tries to do anything for now.
