Shard of Hate Nerf (yes, another thread)(1)Category: GeneralApril-16-2014 6:22 AM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
First off, let me just say I don't have a Shard of Hate so I don't have a horse in the race from that standpoint. What I do have, however, is an interest in this game being as fun as possible and this nerf works against that on a fundamental level.

Was Shard of Hate 'bugged'? Possibly. But that ignores the larger point that those 'bugs' accidentally introduced an element missing from Diablo 3... the feeling of laying waste to everything in your path. One of the primary issues I've had with D3 since its release is that has never seemed to be a design goal... 'challenge' has been placed before 'fun' on the scale of importance, with the thought seemingly that people need to keep playing D3 for years to be able to 'beat' it at it's highest difficulty. No... that is not what makes loot hunting games fun. The end boss is not Diablo or Maltheal on Torment 6, the end boss is getting the perfectly rolled, perfect item for each item slot. The loot chase is what keeps people playing for years, not trying to beat a boss you've beaten a hundred times before when he has more health and does more damage (for potentially no better reward, mind you).

So how do you keep the chase for perfect loot fun? By making the loot itself fun. It's not just about increasing my primary stat and allowing me to do more damage, it's about giving me powers and abilities I didn't have access to, or buffing other things to an absurd level. Capping run speed at 25% might be 'balanced' but it's not 'fun'. Fun is running at 200% movement speed. Fun is disintegrating hordes of mobs then sifting through the ashes to see if you hit the lottery. Fun was a Barbarian whirlwinding with Shard of Hate.

With all of the changes from loot 2.0 you have a good game here... certainly much better than what the public initially received. I just get this sense that Blizzard is focusing so much on 'balance' that they've lost sight of the true goal. Please stop nerfing things... all it does is breed anger and resentment and, frankly, the reason people call for nerfs is not because they feel something is overpowered but, rather, because they feel underpowered in comparison.

TLDR: If a kid is crying because he wants to play with another kid's toy you're better off giving the crying kid their own toy to play with. You take the toy away from the one who has it and you just have a different kid crying.

I've extended the cap on the original thread so we can continue to focus discussion there.
