Help me run this game well, please(1)Category: Technical SupportApril-7-2014 7:11 PM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Hello everybody. I have a custom built PC that I recently put together and was hoping to have Diablo III run perfectly. The game runs 40-60 fps consistently until... I do a rift or play with up to four people or both; when its both I get a glorious 8-16fps. I thought it was my graphics card at first and upgraded to a GTX 660. I even turned "every" graphic setting to low and it helped slightly but it turns out the problem might be my processor... To clarify when I play alone and do anything but rifts my fps is smooth as can be. Rifts are undoable due to the onslaught of never ending demons that appear on the screen at once. I have been told this game doesnt require a powerful cpu, but apparently mine is a tad bit behind. Could you recommend an affordable cpu+motherboard that would allow me to comfortably play this game on high settings while playing with four people or to do rifts?

Grootinator,

If the CPU is older, there is a chance that it has a lot of dust built up in the CPU's fan and heatsink. If you know how, you might want to blow those out with a can of compressed air. Also, it might even be a good idea to change the thermal paste that sits between the CPU heatsink and the CPU.

Let's check if the CPU is getting too hot.

Here's how:

1. Download and install Core Temp.
2. Run Core Temp before launching the game, check the current temperature and write that temperature down.
3. Leave Core Temp running, start the game and play for 10-15 minutes, go back and check the temperature again.

Let me know the before and after temperature results.

Grootinator,

The temps that you posted seem fine. As long as you are not hitting 85°C there should be any heat related problems.

1. Can you get me some information about your power supply? To do so, just open the case and look on the PSU. I need to know the brand and model number.

2. Let's get some more information about your system's hardware.

1. Download and install the newest version of CPU-Z.
2. Once installed, run CPU-Z
3. Click on the "About" tab
4. Click on "Save report (.TXT)" and save the report to the desktop.
5. Open the report, and cut/paste it into this thread.

Grootinator,

Let's also try a different video driver to see if that helps. Uninstall the current driver by using a program called Driver Fusion. This program will ensure that all previous driver files are completely removed.

Here's a link to the Driver Fusion download.

Once there, click on the "Download From Treexy" button to download the free trial.

***Don't download the Premium version.***

1. Run Driver Fusion.
2. Click on "Display" and select "Nvidia".
3. Click on "Delete".
4. You will be asked if you are sure if you want to delete the entries, click on "Yes".
5. Driver Fusion will do it's job, but you may see a message saying that some entries could not be deleted, and it will then ask if you would like to take a look at premium benefits, click on "No".
6. Restart when asked do so.
7. Repeat the same steps for "PhysX" instead of "Display".

Once those two are completely removed, go ahead and install the suggested driver.

Here's a link for the new driver download: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/73218/en-us

When you are going to install the driver I would like for you to select Custom Install > Graphic Driver only.

Grootinator,

Let's also post your D3Debug file. That can be found in your Diablo 3 folder.

Grootinator,

I noticed that your Hardware Class is currently set to 4. Let's change that to 2 to see if that helps any.

Here's how:

Open the D3Prefs file which should be located in your Windows Documents folder. You can get there by going to the Start Menu and clicking on Documents. Then open the Diablo III folder. Once there, open the D3Prefs.txt file and locate the HardwareClass line. Change the "4" to "2" and save and close the file.

Test out the game and let me know what happens.

Grootinator,

If changing the hardware class doesn't help, I'm afraid your performance is being bottlenecked by the CPU, so upgrading that should help.

Something else I noticed in your CPU-Z report is that your RAM isn't matched properly.

DIMM # 1
SMBus address 0x50
Memory type DDR2
Module format Regular UDIMM
Manufacturer (ID) Corsair (7F7F9E0000000000)
Size 2048 MBytes
Max bandwidth PC2-5300 (333 MHz)

DIMM # 2
SMBus address 0x51
Memory type DDR2
Module format Regular UDIMM
Manufacturer (ID) Micron Technology (2C00000000000000)
Size 2048 MBytes
Max bandwidth PC2-6400 (400 MHz)

DIMM # 3
SMBus address 0x52
Memory type DDR2
Module format Regular UDIMM
Manufacturer (ID) Patriot Memory (7F7F7F7F7F020000)
Size 1024 MBytes
Max bandwidth PC2-5300 (333 MHz)

DIMM # 4
SMBus address 0x53
Memory type DDR2
Module format Regular UDIMM
Manufacturer (ID) Samsung (CE00000000000000)
Size 2048 MBytes
Max bandwidth PC2-6400 (400 MHz)

Now, the mismatched RAM shouldn't be affecting the performance, but it could potentially cause some odd crashes. It's usually best to use RAM from the same manufacture that is running at the same bandwidth. It's also best if they are the same size. This is just something to keep in mind in case you decide to do some upgrades.

Grootinator,

I have some in mind, but due to certain policies that I have to follow on the forums I can't suggest any. If you'd like some ideas, feel free to start a new thread and title it something like "Need a suggestion for a new CPU". One of our tech savvy forum regulars should be able to suggest something.
