More complexity to gems(1)Category: GeneralJune-13-2014 5:48 AM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
I was looking at some of the changes 2.1 will bring to diablo and i noticed that there will be legendary gems made for diablo. I became excited because i saw some features in POE that doe some things with gems that diablo could do and could make the game so much better. Then i saw it was restricted to Rings and Amulets. I wanted point out that it would be smart to make the gem system more complex and fun.

I had this idea:
Make class specific legendary gems for more than only rings and amulets.
Lets say you have a cinder coat, which is already awesome and you could find a gem that gives one of your spells something extra if you put it in pants or chest (and something else if you put it in ring or amulet or weapon or head) that would make builds more interesting. Like the legendary gem would give you a magic missile that does 30 - 50% of its damage over time as fire (or other elemental, but for this one its of course nice to have a fire one. Lets say the elementals on this gem is random) damage (for instance). You could think of builds where you build all your item around a fire magic missile and that feels awesome and unique. Of course people will still feel the same after a period of time. so my next point makes that interesting

make gems upgradeble
Let's say the legendary gem can lvl up (got the idea from POE) and after each lvl the gem has, you can go to mystic and make it slightly better. For softcore that makes it slightly interesting to keep the gem you have already and upgrade it. Also you need to find another legendary gem to upgrade it. For hc it makes it more important not to die because you put so much time in upgrading your gem. That gives an extra touch to hc. I have not really put thought in how the upgrading would work. Maybe just give the current gem an upgrade (lets say the 30-50 percent that was random gets higher with each lvl) or make it even more fun. Give the players a choice to add another bonus. Like give the fire damage a chance to stun or a chance to fear. You could also give players the voice to reroll the gem to different stats like the 30-50% damage off magic missile will be higher or the gem will apply to an other random skill (like disintegrate or something). After each preroll the gem is lvl 1 again and you have the lvl it up again. Important thing is, give the player options of upgrading it. All with a decent cost of death breaths, forgotten souls, gold, veiled crystals, gems etc. (maybe even a specific gem mat that could be found after a rift guardian). Each lvl up costs more of course.

give legendary sockets as a item bonus
Give a chance that a legendary item has a socket for these gems as an extra (not instead of other stats) Normally, you can't put a legendary gem in a piece of gear, but when it has this gem socket it is possible (keeps the durability in the game up)

Another idea in this regard would be to go to mystic and put this socket on for a decent amount of forgotten souls, veiled crystals, gems and other mats. People are stacking veiled crystals and marquise gems like crazy so that would be nice to do so people won't have so many

Make non-legendary gems tradeble
A lot of people are complaining that there is no economy anymore in diablo. Well as soon as gems are becoming very needed to craft legendary sockets or lvl up their gem in the socket its nice that you can buy them with gold from someone, or if a friend has a lot you can get them from them. So make them tradable again and it will become a nice addition to the economy

At last i just wanted to point out something non-gem related thing.
make paragon leveling more interesting
At this point grinding xp isn't really interesting (besides the fact that you want to be the highestt in your friendlist). It would be possible to make this more interesting like upgrading specific skills in damage under the rune (like the paragon point spending) or put some other use to leveling up. Could also use it with the gem leveling up. Every 5 lvls you get a gem mat, which makes it possible to lvl up a gem (next to finding them at random) or something like that

Thats about it. I have a lot more to suggest that can be better. The game is getting so much better already and with 2.1 in front of us i see a lot of time i will spend in diablo. But in the end you want to have more durability out of the game. I know the game has no monthly fees so they aren't obligated to support the game in this way until a new expansion comes out. But micro transactions would also really take this away. Let people buy tabs in their storage or let people buy more character slots. And i bet they can find more ways to generate money out of diablo, because its an awesome game.

I want to know what you guys think.

Me too.

I have seen quite a few threads about gems and gem crafting since the launch of the game, and many have been really interesting to read. So, if you would like to share your thoughts on the kind of gem system you think would be enjoyable to have in Diablo III, then we are certainly interested in reading your feedback :-)
