FPS LAG with GTX 780 EVGA OC(1)Category: Technical SupportDecember-4-2013 8:44 AM PST (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
This is frustrating that I can play Battlefield 4 on ultra settings with stable 60 fps and I cant even play D3 on minimum settings with stable 60 fps during large combat. My FPS went down to 20-25 in Inferno MP8 with/without party. I tried a lot of fixes but none work. I tried changing settings in Nvidia Control Panel. I tried editing the D3Pref file. I also tried unparking the CPU. But none seem to improve the gameplay. Please help...

Hello Myraklus!

Try disabling the V-Sync in-game.
I currently run a GTX 760 and I get the same problem.
Also the first lags ( 1 - 4min ) when you join the game are pretty much normal..
It's because of your hard drive not because of your graphic card.

Hope that helps!

Is the game installed on a HDD or SSD/USB?

many fast processors these days such as 4-8 core cpus, handle single/dual-threaded applications poorly compared to cpu's that are built with one or two cores.

This is only a half-truth.

Intel's i-series processors are, clock for clock, faster than their predecessors. This makes them more capable single-thread chips than any of their purpose-built dual-core setups. Each successive generation of i-chip has also had faster single-thread performance than its predecessor, though only by marginal amounts (5%-10% per generation).

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of AMD's efforts. Bulldozer and its derivatives do indeed get faster with each successive generation, but to my knowledge they have not yet reached the single-thread performance (clock for clock) of the Phenom II which preceeded them. Depending upon the source the amount they fall behind varies but I've seen deltas anywhere from 5% to 20%.

That said, however, I agree with you that the limitation is not in the graphics hardware. I've recently been trying to determine what if anything can be done about it as the result of a thread with another GTX 780 Ti user, but have so far come up blank. The only thing I can find is that GPU usage tanks when framerate does, which means the framerate isn't dropping as a result of the GPU being overloaded - it's as a result of it simply not receiving the data it needs to keep drawing (which could be as simple as a delayed "Paint" command for all we know).

I've asked our Compatibility Department to take a look at a couple of machines running 700 series Nvidia cards and see if they can see any issues. They've been given a list of threads of reports specifying these cards so they can see the circumstances surrounding when issues may be arising. We'll have to wait and see what they come up with.

Since I last posted in this thread, it looks like a lot of people with cards not in the 700 series and some AMD users have chimed in. I'm not sure though that their having the same symptoms.

Here's what I found out from our Compat guys. It's not good news I'm afraid.

They spent quite some time running through in-game activities to try and isolate framerate drops using the current Retail build and internal builds with the GTX 780, GTX 770, and 760 across multiple machines and the latest GeForce drivers. They tried running though the campaign, bounty runs, rift runs, and with full groups doing the bounty and rift runs.

They did not observe any significant performance drops during game, nor any graphics card overheating issues.

So,...

I'm not sure where to go from here. At home and here at work, I don't experience the symptoms either but I play mostly solo. I'm using a GTX 580 at work and SLI'd GTX 670s at home. I'm trying to get a hold of a GTX 780 or 780 Ti to play around with at home but haven't managed to get one just yet.

MrH,

They weren't using Rakkis Crossing specifically when they were doing this testing, they were checking reports of Nvidia 700 series cards experiencing overall low frame rates.

MrH,

I've just made the request actually. I'll have to wait though for a response as to when they can arrange for that testing.

I should be getting a GTX 780 for my home system tomorrow so I'll be able to start testing and making comparisons to my existing GTX 670s in SLI. I'm interested in seeing if making any adjustments to the GPU Boost 2.0 thresholds makes a difference or not. This would only affect Nvidia cards above the GTX 660 series though and there's been a few reports here and there from users not using those cards, but they may not be the same issue.

I'll test what and when I can as I'm off the next two days and will be back Tues.

FPS LAG with GTX 780 EVGA OC(114)May-13-2014 4:28 PM PDT (9 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
Ok, so I have a GTX 780 now to test with. I was able to do a little of that the last couple of days and this is what I've found out so far. Please keep in mind that this is my own personal testing at home and is not meant to provide a solution that will work for everyone. It's just what I saw on my own personal computer and you can decide for yourselves whether my results are of any value to you or not.

To start, I'll describe again my setup.

i7 2600k at stock speed, no overclocking.
I'm running two OCZ Vertex 3s in raid 0 but I moved the game install over to a standard 2 TB drive for the purposes of testing.
Windows 7 Premium 64 bit
EVGA 780 SC 03G-P4-2784-KR
8 gig ram
on board sound
30" Dell monitor running at 2560 x 1600

Started with downloading the latest Nvidia drivers, 335.23. Everything in the Nvidia control panel left at default except for:

Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration set to Single display performance mode
Power management mode set to Prefer maximum performance

Before putting in the GTX780. I ran a few benchmarks with my GTX 670s both with and without SLI and checked performance just sitting in town in the game. Then I ran the same tests with the GTX780 once it was put it. This was just to make sure the new card was actually faster which it was. I'm runnign the game in windowed mode because I prefer it that way, but the performance in-game was a bit better when it was in full screen. I use the game's vertical sync mode as I find it gives a much "stabler" screen than when it's not enabled, plus I'm not concerned with getting really high fps numbers while playing.

Now, as far as Rakkis Crossing was concerned, my testing consisted of running it solo and with another player in the game. I have not gotten into a 4 player game as of yet.

I was able to get the fps to drastically drop consistently only by setting the number of sound channels in game to 128. This happened for my friend as well whose system is notably faster than mine and he's running a GTX 780Ti. With the number of channels reduced to 32, which is what I've always run it at prior to this test, the game did not exhibit the same slowdowns. It did very briefly drop occasionally but not enough to really notice if I hadn't been watching for it. 16 channels works too but the lack of some sounds in that mode was distracting. 32 works just fine for my tastes.

Now I know this isn't going to help many of you as I see so many posts from people with different hardware posting in this thread, despite it being just for the 700 series card, but that's what I saw.

I did repeat the results on a second machine that uses an ATI HD 5870, so for me anyways, the number of sound channels in use is a very major factor in the poor performance issue.

More to come as I'm able to do more testing...

DETERM,

I don't really have anything specific I can give you other then that it's actively being looked into. They've tentatively targeted the 2.1.0 patch as to when it might be addressed but that can easily change depending on what they find to be the cause and what the fix would entail.

They did mention that disabling the game's vsync option might help though screen tearing may result if you do that.
