Loot Drops In Groups Might Be Bugged (Blue Req)(1)Category: Bug ReportsApril-10-2014 12:14 PM PDT (10 years ago) Go to Blizzard forum post
This has been bothering me for a while and at first i wasn't really sure if its true or not but after putting in more than 100hours in ros already and playing in groups 80% of the time i've noticed a pattern that me and my clanmates seem to notice over and over again.

When were in a group of 4 their is always 1 person who gets the most legs. Its not always the same person and varies from game to game, but it just seems way to fishy that we can go from game to game rift to rift and 95% of the time 3 of us get nothing (or just 1 leg) and 1 person in the group ends up with 3-6+ legs per game/rift. This discrepancy seemed small before but now the numbers seem to be increasing in the same manor since the Rifts got a buff. Last night i was playing in a group of 4, and 1 person literally got 10 legs in an hour doing t3 rifts. The rest of us got 1 leg each the entire hour. It truly felt like the game was trying to reward the whole group but instead of it dropping the loot on our screen a bug is stopping that and instead moves that loot over to the "feels like rng luck person". Maybe the bug is so hidden that its never been noticed.

The bug feels like it steals legs from other people and drops them all on 1 person. I'm not saying that the bug steals everyone's drop rates im suggesting that when our account roll's a leg the game bug's out and drops it on the same person throughout the whole game. If this is truly a bug this would explain why we only get a few drops since the bug wouldn't happen every time.

Is anyone else noticing this in group play? I've talked to many of my friends and clan mates and they all notice the same pattern as if all the luck is thrown on one person, but to me it feels like its more like our legs being secretly moved from our loot screen to theirs by accident. In Diablo 2 only 1 set of loot drops for all players, in D3 everyone gets their own loot so this code is new to blizzard. Its possible that their could be a bug and its also possible that its something else entirely (like some accounts getting bugged to not drop loot like in the ROS beta). It could also be RNG, but i highly doubt rng could continue to replicate such results netting 1 person 4-10+ legs a rift run and the other 3 in the group get 0-1.

If anyone else has noticed this pattern please post. If this pattern is truly showing up everywhere maybe we can get blizzard to take a second look at the coding.

Hi Everyone,

Both QA and the development team have looked into these reports extensively, analyzing code from before patch 2.0.4 as well as after the most recent set of hotfixes, and at this point everything looks normal; we aren’t seeing any bugs or aberrant behavior with how loot is distributed in multiplayer games (including favoring one player over another). More legendary items than ever are dropping, certainly, but random is still random and streaks of "feast or famine" are still possible. This is the nature of RNG (Random Number Generators) and has not changed. With a heavier output of results (item drops), it is also much easier for our brains to extrapolate patterns where in reality there are none.

We do have a safety net in place to help even out those long periods without a Legendary drop in the form of (what we call) the “unlucky” bonus. This bonus slowly increases your Legendary drop rate over time and is based on the amount of time you’ve spent fighting monsters without seeing a Legendary drop normally. Just because this safety net is there, though, and should help ensure you get a Legendary every few hours, it doesn’t mean that everyone will always get exactly X number of Legendary items, exactly every X number of hours. Additionally, it’s quite possible that if you split up from your friends when playing in the same game, you could absolutely miss a Legendary item that dropped for you from a monster, chest, or other clickable object while you were off screen or in another part of the game world. If this happens, this will “count” against your “unlucky” bonus and reset it, and is another excellent reason to stay close to your friends (aside from the fact that playing with friends is fun!).

That all said, thanks for the reports about this, and we hope this information helps!

Shouldn't the legendary/drops show up even if it is off screen? There will always be 1person that strays from everyone and we are punished for a player like that?

I apologize, I was unclear. What I was getting at was that if a legendary drops off-screen and you don't notice it and don't pick it up, it still resets your timer. This happens a lot with split farming;

you do realize that chest / breakables are global loot drops.

Because of this. If a player loots a chest while on a different map from his party member and the party member never swings back around to that area to check for loot and misses a legendary drop, it would be very easy for him to throw his hands up and say "loot never drops for me!" when in fact, the loot was there, but it was missed.

Split farming is okay, if that's what you really want to do. But I just wanted to make it clear that its easier to miss legendary drops doing this if you don't check the areas your party members have cleared. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
